From dialecal swedish lubber (“fat and sluggish person”), from Proto-Germanic *lubbǭ (“that which hangs or dangles”), from Proto-Indo-European *lewbʰ-, *lep- (“to peel, skin”). See also English lubber, English lob, Danish lobbes (“bumpkin, clown”).
