Mã is often translated as "horse" when using ma/mà/mả/mã/má/mạ as an example of tone distinctions in Vietnamese. However, like most Sino-Vietnamese readings, mã can only be used this way as part of certain compound words borrowed from Chinese. The word for "horse" in Vietnamese is ngựa.
