Likely borrowed from Tai Nüa ᥛᥫᥒᥰ (möeng, “region, plain, country”), possibly through Jingpho mung (“country”). Ultimately from Proto-Tai *mɯəŋᴬ (“township”). Compare Zaiwa ming (“country, as in mingdan (“country”)”).
