maaorava
Finnish edit
Etymology edit
maa (“earth, ground, soil”) + orava (“squirrel”)
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
maaorava
- (zoology) chipmunk (rodent of the genera Tamias, Neotamias or Eutamias, formerly all classified under Tamias)
- Synonym: tikutaku
Usage notes edit
- The English verbatim translation ground squirrel, together with a modifier, may refer to a number of both Old and New World genera in the family Sciuridae. It's used without a modifier of the genus Spermophilus, the individual species of which are called siiseli or suslikki in Finnish.
- The term maaorava is more widely used than tikutaku, the term coined by a committee as a replacement for maaorava.
