Inherited from Latin martyr, or Vulgar Latin martur, from Ancient Greek μάρτυρ (mártur). Compare Old Italian martore, Sardinian màrturu (invalid), Calabrian marture, Lombard màrtul (saint). Or directly from Greek. Doublet of martir.
