Inherited from Ottoman Turkish مرهم (merhem), from Arabic مَرْهَم (marham). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.) (Particularly because of Proto-Turkic *em (“medicine”). Compare to Salar em, Turkish em, Tuvan эм (em), etc at эм - TDK listed as dialectal(“medicine”)
