Etymology edit
From mi̠³⁵ (“(in compounds) mother; female”) + pʰa³⁵ (“(in compounds) father; male”); ultimately from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mi (“female; girl; feminine suffix”) and Proto-Sino-Tibetan *p ~ ba (“male; father; third personal pronoun”) respectively. Cognate with Burmese မိဘ (mi.bha., “parents”). Compare Lhao Vo myhi” pho”.

Usage notes edit
The two elements of this word are no longer used to refer to “mother” or “father”. Loanwords from Jingpho, a³¹ nuŋ⁵⁵ for “mother” and a³¹ va⁵⁵ for “father”, are used instead.
