From Proto-Balto-Slavic *meilas (compare Latvian mīls (nice, sweet, dear, cherished, beloved), Old Prussian mijls (sweet, dear), and Proto-Slavic *mìlъ (soft, mild, gentle, agreeable, pleasant, sweet, dear)), from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁- (soft, tender). Cognate with Latin mītis (weak, tender, soft).
