From mirk +‎ -en, or perhaps from Middle English *mirknen, *merknen, from Old Norse myrkna (to darken), cognate with Icelandic myrkna (to darken), Swedish mörkna (to get dark, darken), Danish mørkne (to darken). More at murk.
