Both Gardiner and Allen suggest the preposition could be a reduplication of m (in).[1][2] Gardiner takes the adverb separately and considers it apparently an 18th Dynasty development from jmj.[3]

Pronunciation edit

Preposition edit

mm
  1. among

Usage notes edit

Only used with plural pronouns and plural nouns, e.g. ẖrd mm bꜣkw (a child among the servants) or nouns with a plural sense, e.g. ngꜣw mm mnmnt (A steer amongst the herd).

mm is used in a more abstract or general sense than jmjtw, which refers more to a specific physical position among some nouns.
