mortality rate (plural mortality rates)

  1. The number of deaths per given unit of population over a given period of time.
    The mortality rate of people aged 50 or more that smoke is much higher than the one of non-smokers in the same age group.
    Under-five mortality rate is the probability per 1,000 that a newborn baby will die before reaching age five, if subject to current age-specific mortality rates.
