Etymology edit

From Middle High German nœtic, nœtec, nōtic, nōtec, nōdic, from Old High German nōtag (forced, urgent, needy), from Proto-West Germanic *naudag (obligatory, needful), from Proto-Germanic *naudagaz, equivalent to Not +‎ -ig. Cognate with German Low German nödig, English needy, Swedish nödig.
