From Proto-Polynesian *ŋaakau; compare with Maori ngākau (“bowels, heart”), Tahitian ʻāʻau (“bowels, heart, conscience, soul”), Tongan ngākau (“intestines”) and Samoan gāʻau (“entrails, penis”).[1][2]
