From Middle English *nayllees, from Old English *næġllēas, from Proto-West Germanic *naglalaus, from Proto-Germanic *naglalausaz, equivalent to nail + -less. Cognate with Middle Low German nāgellôs (“nailless”), Dutch nagelloos (“nailless”), German nagellos (“nailless”), Icelandic naglalaus (“nailless”).
