Etymology edit

From Middle Dutch nederlaghe (15th c.), probably after early modern German Niederlage, from Middle High German niderlāge (the act of sinking to the ground). Analysable as neder (nether, down) +‎ laag (layer), though the latter word is used in the obsolete sense of “act or way of lying” (for which now ligging).
