From gur (stone). Alternatively a variant of hungëroj, from Proto-Indo-European *ger- 'to scream'. Compare Lithuanian gùrti (shrill, shriek, scream), Sanskrit [script needed] (járatē, it rushes, sounds, crackles, shouts).
