Inherited from Old Polish obrzym, from Proto-Slavic *ob(ъ)rinъ, from *ob(ъ)rъ (“Avar”), from Byzantine Greek Άβαρος (Ábaros, “Avar”). Sense 2 is a semantic loan from English giant.
