Dutch edit

Pronunciation edit

Etymology 1 edit

From oog (eye) +‎ taal (language).

Noun edit

oogtaal f (uncountable)

  1. Nonverbal communication using the eyes.
    Synonym: ogentaal

Etymology 2 edit

From oog (eye) +‎ taal (hair); this meaning of taal is long-obsolete in modern Dutch and derives from Proto-West Germanic *tagl (hair, tail). It is thus cognate with English tail, and etymologically distinct from the common word taal meaning "language".

Noun edit

oogtaal m (plural oogtalen)

  1. (obsolete, rare) Synonym of wimper (eyelash).
