From Ancient Greek ὀστρακώδης (ostrakṓdēs, “covered with shell”), from ὄστρακον (óstrakon, “clay pot; shell”); compare translingual Ostracoda.

- Any of many small crustaceans, of the class Ostracoda, that resemble a shrimp enclosed in a bivalve shell.
