Etymology edit
Possibly borrowed from Middle Low German ovel, ovele, from Proto-Germanic *ubilaz. Alternatively related to dialectal evelä, Estonian õel (“wicked, cruel, savage, evil, mean”) and Votic õjõla (Pummala).
