From Javanese palawija (ꦥꦭꦮꦶꦗ, “second crop”), from Old Javanese phala (“fruit, seed, result”) + dwija (“twice”), from Sanskrit फल (phala, “fruit, seed, result”) + द्विज (dvija, “twice”).
