Etymology edit

From Old Hungarian pillanik ("to open and close with a sudden movement <of an eyelid>") + -at (noun-forming suffix). Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries. [1] Compare English blink of an eye or Polish w mgnieniu oka.
