French edit

Etymology edit

From Old French plongier, from Vulgar Latin *plumbicāre, from Latin plumbum (lead).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /plɔ̃.ʒe/
  • (file)

Verb edit

plonger

  1. to dive
  2. (figuratively) to plunge
plonger dans ses souvenirsto take a trip down memory lane
  3. (reflexive, figuratively) to immerse oneself (in something)

Conjugation edit

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written plonge- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
