Coined by Italian scholar Francesco Moneti in 1677 as a superlative form of precipitevolmente (hastily, precipitously). By surface analysis, precipitevole (hasty, precipitous) +‎ -issimo (very, superlative suffix) +‎ -evole (-ible) +‎ -mente (-ly).
