   Lấy dạ tiểu nhân đo lòng quân tử.

   Literally, “To use the inferior person's belly to measure the superior person’s bosom.” / To use the petty person's mind to measure the magnanimous person’s heart; to judge others by oneself; to psychologically project.

   Quân tử mười năm báo thù chưa muộn.

   Literally, “It's never too late for a person of class to take vengeance 10 years later.” / I will have my revenge! Mark my word!

   Quân tử nhất ngôn.

   Literally, “A person of class only says it once.” / I give you my word.

     Khổng tử nói: “Người quân tử hiểu rõ về nghĩa, kẻ tiểu nhân hiểu rõ về lợi.” Chú thích. – Hiểu rõ nghĩa là thích nghĩa. Hiểu rõ lợi nên thích lợi. Có sách bàn thêm: Vì tiểu nhân hiểu rõ về lợi, thích lợi, cho nên người quân tử (trị dân) riêng về mình thì không nên nói về lợi, nhưng phải xét cái lợi của tiểu nhân (dân) mà làm lợi cho họ.

     Confucius said: “The superior person clearly understands rectitude; the inferior person clearly understands profits.” Annotation. - Clear understanding of rectitude means cherishing rectitude. Clear understanding of profits brings about cherishing profits. Other books further comment that: Because the [social] inferiors clearly understand profits and cherish profits, so the [social] superiors (the governors), concerning themselves, should not talk about profits, yet must consider the [social] inferiors’ (the populace’s) profits so as to profit them.

     Quí Khang tử hỏi Khổng tử về phép trị dân: “Giết kẻ vô đạo (độc ác) để cho kẻ khác thành hữu đạo (lương thiện) chăng? Khổng tử đáp: “Ông trị dân cần gì phải dùng biện pháp giết người? Ông muốn thiện thì dân sẽ hóa thiện. Đức hạnh của người quân tử (người trị dân) như gió, mà đức hạnh của tiển nhân (dân) như cỏ. Gió thổi thì cỏ tất rạp xuống.”

     Sir Ji Kang asked Confucius about governance: “Should the immoral (evil) ones be killed so others will become moral (good)?” Confucius replied: “Sir, when governing, why use killing? When ye strive for goodness then the populace will become good. The [social] superiors’ (the governors’) character is like the wind; the [social] inferiors’ (the populace’s) character is like grass. When the wind blows, grass will surely bend down.”

     Confucius said: “The noble person acts harmoniously yet is not conformist; the petty person is conformist yet does not act harmoniously.”

Usage notes

Its original/historical meaning "socially superior person" is obsolete; in modern usage, it only means "morally superior person".
