Borrowed from Middle French rafle (a type game played with three dice), from Old French rafle, raffle (dice game, plundering), from rafler (to snatch, seize, carry off), from Old High German *raffalon, a frequentative of *raffon (modern German raffen). Related to rapen. Doublet of raffle.
