Borrowed from older German Roulanz, from French rouler. Originally in the sense of circulation of money in (sense 1).

Usage notes edit
"Roll" might provide intuition. Likely intuitively connected to rulla (“roll”) by many native speakers as well (in addition to being etymologically connected).
