Inherited from Ottoman Turkish صرتلان (sırtlan, “hyena”), which derives from Proto-Turkic *sïrtlan (“hyena”); equivalent to sırt (“coarse back hairs of an animal”) + -lan (“suffix denoting a wild, predatory animal”). For the suffix, compare aslan (“lion”), yılan (“snake”), kaplan (“tiger”).
