From Proto-Vietic *k-rǝmʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *grəm(ʔ) ~ *gram() (to thunder; to rumble); cognate with Tho [Cuối Chăm] kʰrʌm⁴, Pacoh crứm (thunder), Bahnar grơ̆m (distant thunder) and Khmer គ្រុម (krum, sound of thunder).
