Etymology edit
Borrowed from Middle Low German sachtmodig. Cognate of Swedish saktmodig. Compare also sagte (“quiet”) and mod (“mood, affect”). Superficially similar words include: hovmodig (“arrogant”), tålmodig (“patient”), ædelmodig (“magnanimous”), godmodig (“kind, friendly”), vemodig (“melancholic”), overmodig (“overconfident”), frimodig (“candid, frank”), mismodig (“despondent”), heltemodig (“heroic”).
