From Middle High German sameln, samlen, samelen, from Old High German *samalōn, from Proto-West Germanic *samalōn (to bring together, assemble). Akin to Old High German Old High German samanōn, from Proto-Germanic *samnōną and Old High German gisemōn (to collect, gather, remain).
