From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *saŋəlaʀ (to stir-fry, cook in a frying pan without oil). Compare Bikol Central sanglag, Hiligaynon sanlag, Cebuano sanglag, Indonesian sangrai, and Malay selar. Doublet of sanglay. See also sanglal.
