From Middle High German schrīben, from Old High German scrīban, from Proto-Germanic *skrībaną, a late borrowing from Latin scrībō (“write”), which comes from a word meaning “to scribe, to scrape”. Cognate with German schreiben, Dutch schrijven, English shrive, Icelandic skrifa.
