A formation from thyej with shpër prefix, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeh₃i- ‘sharpen’. Alternatively from from Proto-Indo-European *spr̥g̑h 'to spring, jump'. Compare Lithuanian spreñgti ‘to push in’, Old Church Slavonic [script?] (pręgti) ‘to spin, stretch’, Ancient Greek [script?] (spérchesthai) ‘to hasten’, Sanskrit [script?] (spṛhayati) ‘is eager’, Old English springan 'to spring'.
