From Proto-Tai *saːwᴬ (“unmarried woman”). Cognate with Lao ສາວ (sāo), Lü ᦉᦱᧁ (ṡaaw), Tai Nüa ᥔᥣᥝᥲ (sàaw), Shan သၢဝ် (sǎao), Tai Dam ꪎꪱꪫ, Ahom 𑜏𑜧 (saw), 𑜏𑜨𑜧 (sow), 𑜏𑜧𑜤 (sawu), 𑜏𑜧𑜈𑜫 (saww), or 𑜏𑜦𑜡 (sō), Zhuang sau, Thai สาว (sǎao).
