From Proto-Norse ᛋᛏᛡᛒᛡ (stᴀbᴀ) (accusative plural), from Proto-Germanic *stabaz, whence also Old English stæf, Old High German stap. Some forms from an i-stem variant *stabiz, whence also Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌰𐍆𐍃 (stafs).
