From Proto-Germanic *stebnō, *stemnō (voice), from Proto-Indo-European *stomen- (mouth, muzzle). Cognate with Old High German stimna (German Stimme and Danish and Norwegian stemme, Swedish stemma), Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌹𐌱𐌽𐌰 (stibna), Old English stefn and stemn, Dutch stem.
