Etymology edit

Uncertain, but probably of Slavic origin; compare Romanian strai (clothing, garment). Cf. Polish strój (garment, clothing, attire), Slovene srajca (shirt), Serbo-Croatian tranja (rag, tatters). Alternatively from a Vulgar Latin *sternium, or from Latin stramen.
