From Middle Dutch strepe, from Middle Low German strepe, from Proto-Germanic *stripō(n) or *straipō(n), of uncertain ultimate origin, perhaps derived from a lost strong verb *strīpaną, with no clear cognates outside of Germanic except for Irish sríab (“line, stripe”).[1]
