Romanian edit

Etymology edit

From an earlier hypothetical form *sughiuța, from Vulgar Latin *suggluttiō or *subgluttiō, probably from an alteration of Latin singultō, singultāre, from singultus. The (Vulgar) Latin was probably influenced by gluttiō, gluttīre (cf. înghiți). Compare Aromanian sugljits, sugljitsari, Sicilian sugghiuzzari, Spanish sollozar, Portuguese soluçar. Compare also Italian singhiozzare, from *singlutiāre, from singultāre, and also French sangloter.

Verb edit
