From Old Norse sultr (“hunger, famine”), from Proto-Germanic *swultiz (“hunger, death”), from Proto-Indo-European *swel- (“to smoulder, burn”). Cognate with Danish sult (“hunger, starvation”), Old English swylt (“death”).
