From Middle High German diut(i)sch, tiu(t)sch, from Old High German diutisk, from Proto-Germanic *þiudiskaz. Cognate with German deutsch, Dutch Diets, German Low German dütsch, West Frisian Tjutsk, Middle English thedisch, Icelandic þýskur, Gothic 𐌸𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌹𐍃𐌺𐍃 (þiudisks).
