third-party claim (plural third-party claims)

  1. (law) A derivative lawsuit brought by a defendant in an original lawsuit, claiming that another new party being brought in is responsible for or should share in the plaintiff's damages against the defendant.

Usage notes edit

  • Practise note: the third party being sued by the defendant is cited as "First Third Party", "Second Third Party" etc.
