- (interjection sense) Ellipsis of mjuka tjänare, in turn clipping of ödmjuka tjänare (“humble servant”), from phrases such as jag är eder ödmjuka tjänare (”I am your humble servant”) etc. Compare German servus and Italian ciao.
- (noun sense) From tjäna (“to serve”) + -are (“-er”).
