EtymologyEdit

Prefixed formation from merrë 'fear', with r-doublet for expressive reasons, from Proto-Indo-European *mor- (feminine evil spirit). Cognate to Germanic* maron 'nightmare'( cf. Old English mare (nightmare, monster)), Slavic *mora (cf.Polish zmora 'nightmare', Czech mura 'nightmare, moth'), or to Greek μέριμνα (mérimna, thought, trouble, uneasiness)[1].
