Etymology 1 edit

From Proto-Vietic *p-loh (to blossom), a prefixed form of *ʔa-loh (to go out) (whence Chut [Rục] loh¹ ("to go out")). Cognate with Chut [Rục] bloh¹.

The Northern form giỗ (now obsolete?) appeared in the Cách trí giáo khoa thư (革智教科書), composed in the 1920s. See also the triplet giồng (Northern), lôông ((North) Central), trồng (Southern).
