From Vulgar Latin ceresia, from the neuter plural of Late Latin ceresium, from Latin cerasium, from Ancient Greek κεράσιον (kerásion, cherry), from κερασός (kerasós, bird cherry), ultimately possibly of Anatolian origin. Compare Romanian cireașă.
