Disputed. Possibilities include:
- From Proto-Indo-European *uǵʰ-eh₂, from the root *weǵʰ- (“to bring, carry”),[1][2] whence also Gothic 𐍅𐌹𐌲𐍃 (wigs, “way, road”).
- From Proto-Albanian *wadā, from Proto-Indo-European *wodʰ-eh₂, from the root *wedʰ- (“to beat, strike”),[3] whence also Sanskrit वध् (vadh, “kill, strike”).
- Akin or borrowed from Ancient Greek ὁδός (hodós, “way, road”).[4]
- From Proto-Indo-European *wedʰ- (“to lead”).
By some identified as the source of Ancient Greek οὔθα (oútha, “dust; way, road”).[5]
