Origin obscure. Possibly from Proto-West Germanic *unbur (“unborn child, womb-child”), from Proto-Germanic *unburaz (“unborn”, adjective), equivalent to un- (“un-, not”) + a derivative of Proto-Germanic *beraną (“to bear”), related to Old English byre (“son, child, descendant”).
