English edit

Etymology edit

From international scientific vocabulary, using New Latin combining forms, from uro- +‎ lithiasis = urolith +‎ -iasis = uro- +‎ lith +‎ -iasis.

Noun edit

urolithiasis (countable and uncountable, plural urolithiases)

  1. (biology, medicine) Formation of, and thus also presence of, calculi in the urinary tract.

Coordinate terms edit

  • nephrolithiasis (sensu stricto, coordinate, but in practice any stone passed in the urine may be called a kidney stone, as the locus of its formation may not yet be known; and thus many mentions of urolithiasis and nephrolithiasis are loosely synonymous, which is to say, not precisely differentiated)
